• What is the best practice for locating the scratchconfig location in ESXi 5.1?  - check the blog that talks about the scratch partition
• Is there a lot of traffic that goes from the ESXi host to the scratchconfig location so that you would want it on fast SAN Fibre storage?  Not really. Most systems have it on local disk and that works fine
• Or can you put it on slower SAN storage such as an NFS share?  Persistent scratch space may be provisioned on a FAT 16, VMFS, or NFS partition accessible by the ESXi host. (KB 1033696)
• What is the typical size of a scratchconfig directorys structure for an ESXi 5.1 host?  Would depend on the log rotation configured
• How can I specify the scratchconfig location in a host profile?  see the KB
• If I am directing logs to a syslog server, do I need a scratchconfig location other than in the server's RAM? no
